In the age of digital speed, Avatar and cyber-shopping, it seems like everything is racing for the future.  Marc Jacobs on the other hand, brought Louis Vuitton’s Fall Ready to Wear collection back in the other direction.  The clothing had very conservative silhouettes. Super-elongated jackets, hair pulled back, faded vintage florals. A few country plaids.  The style evoked Chloe Sevigny’s character in HBO’s “Big Love” or a depression-era schoolteacher.  Colors were muted, dusty.  The shapes were still quite feminine, and a few pieces looked like the schoolmarm wanted to break out in the vintage patterned corset styling.

The handbags had some of the muted mustards.  Some of the quilted monagram pieces had dusty pastels that worked back to the clothing.  Some bags had very luxurious fur worked into the bag (I’m seeing a big comeback in fur across most of the Paris collections). Dark appliqued blocked florals were also seen on many of the handbags as well, with lace and hand-painted crocodile texture.

See by Chloe is basically the French answer to Marc by Marc Jacobs. They are both the young, hip diffusion lines of major fashion houses, but that's not where the similarities end. Talk about having your hands full. Katie Holmes hefted super-cute daughter Suri Cruise and a beautiful Chloe Marcie Hobo in a lovely soft brown leather. The handbag is a big hit this season, and it’s no surprise to see Katie carrying it, given her love for Chloe purses. The actress toted the Chloe Paraty everywhere last year, and it looks as though she’s found a great replacement!

Derek Lam can do no wrong in our eyes. His knack for successfully redefining classic silhouettes and incorporating modern details like the asymmetrical lines, elongated shape and tassel embellishments of the Nadia Hobo make him our favorite designer this spring. Michael Kors is quickly becoming one of our favorite bag designers. The label continues to improve with each season and spring's 'Tonne' collection is proof of that. The gorgeous Tonne Tote boasts a modern look with luxe-looking hardware accents and trendy detailing. The bag is priced under $1000, and who can argue with wanting to acquire a great bag on a budget?
