Best Dressed at the Oscars 2009

Posted on on Mon, 02/23/2009 - 10:56 by Natalie Zee Drieu

022209 Winslet 200X400
My top 5 picks from the Oscars were dresses that I couldn't get enough of and I had to oogle over them each time I saw a glimpse of them on the red carpet. The Oscars last night was definitely a throwback to glamour with beautiful strapless or one shoulder gowns dominating the red carpet. Kate Winslet is my best dressed #1 wearing YSL stood out in my book because her entire look was picture perfect from her gown, hair, to jewels. I loved her acceptance speech. How awesome is she? Seriously, she's someone who'd be fun to have a pint with in a pub in London.

Here are the rest of my favorites:

022209 Portman 200X400
2. Natalie Portman looked stunning in her pink with gold embellished Rodarte. She stood out in that color in a sea of black, white, and red, and looked just fresh for her age.

022209 Cruz 300X400
3. I wasn't a big fan of the poofy dresses worn on the likes of SJP or Miley Cirus. But somehow Penelope Cruz made it work by channeling Audrey Hepburn's "Sabrina" in her vintage Balmain dress.

022209 Pintos 200X400
4. Freida Pinto in John Galliano. I love the over the shoulder and sheer one-sleeved look of the dress.

02209 Tomei 200X400
5. Marisa Tomei shone in this amazing pleated Versace dress. I only wish she would have had a better hairstyle that would have been a bit more ordered, possibly pulled back to compliment the complexity of the dress.

Honorable Mentions:
022209 Hensons 200X400
Taraji P. Henson in Roberto Cavalli. I loved the multiple layers of the dress. Her hair, jewels, everything about her looked great.
02209 Hathaway 200X400
Anne Hathaway in Armani Prive looked statuesque and glamourous but she dressed too old in my book. I would have loved to seen her wear something much more fun since she's in her 20's. I couldn't get "The Devil Wears Prada" out of my head.

022209 Anistonm 400X400

Oh and the surprise appearance of Jennifer Aniston to the Oscars was fun to watch. Of course they had to pan to Brad and Angie to see their reaction. She looked great despite the cheesy skit her and Jack Black were trying to play off. She stayed true to her bohemian style with this subtle braid in the front of her hair. It worked for her. Not many other people could have gotten away with it at an event like that.

Kate Winslet Bundles Up with a Prada Purse

Stars…they’re just like Us! Okay, maybe not, but it is pretty refreshing to see Kate Winslet and director husband Sam Mendes in this picture of normalcy. The happy pair are appropriately bundled up for the winter weather in toasty parkas and - what’s this? - a Prada nylon tote? Well, so much for a reality check. Still, as far as Prada purses go, this baby is one of the most low-key and utilitarian models around, and the cross-body strap is a smart choice given Kate’s heavy layered ensemble. Functional, but fashionable. Don’t you love it when that happens?

Take a closer look at 2009 Prada's Snakeskin collection

Prada is joining the 2009 Snakeskin trend...

Snake skin is very different from crocodile skin and other exotic leather, it is much softer so it is perfect for handbag with sophisticated in design. More of the snake skin are skin from Sea snakes which are not endangered species. Each Sea snake has its unqiue pattern skin which is delicate, beautiful and flexible.

DESIGNER VS HIGH STREET: ASOS do Kate Moss' Prada Butterfly sunglasses

You know how we were banging on last year about how Kate Moss' Prada Butterfly sunnies were going to be the frame of the incoming summer? Well, not to sound smug or anything, but we're guessing we were oh-so-right...

Prada Pailette Shoulder Bag

A purse like this might fly during Couture Week, but honey, it’s never going to end up on my arm (and not just because I’d have to take out a loan to buy the darn thing). The ombre-esque gold, green, and black pailettes are just a little too ‘Mardi Gras’ for my taste, and the clunky resin link shoulder strap just doesn’t mesh with the glitzy design. Even if it did, where would you take such a purse? A cocktail party? The Oscars? I’m stumped. Available for $1,550 at Neiman Marcus.
